Nairobi City County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has urged residents to take individual responsibility for maintaining cleanliness within the City.

Addressing the media on August 15, Mosiria vowed to deal with the menace of illegal dumping and urination within the undesignated areas.

"We shall not tolerate illegal dumping and urinating all over the city which is prohibited in the City County bylaws. I urge all Nairobi residents to take personal responsibility for keeping the environment clean. It is everyones duty to keep their working environment clean by being responsible of the waste they generate,” said Mosiria.

The environment chief officer clarified that the county government is tasked to ensure that people live in a clean environment.

“Our duty as the County Government is not to arrest anyone but to make sure people work and live in a clean environment as envisaged in Governor Sakaja's manifesto of a City of order, dignity, hope, and opportunity for all,” he added.

Since he transitioned to the environment subsector, Mosiria has embarked on an awareness tour around the city streets and market in a bid to discourage pollution.

He also promised that the County Government would provide the required equipment and machinery to pick up the garbage and deliver it to the final dump site.

Commenting on the issue of illegal dumping, the County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi Ms Maureen Njeri termed the illegal practice as completely unacceptable as it puts the environment at risk.

She added that illegal dumping carries considerable fines of Sh.100,000 for first offenders and Sh.300,000 for repeat offenders under the Solid and Waste Management Act.

The Green Nairobi boss called on all Nairobians to join hands with the County in making the City clean.
