Over the weekend Kirigiti shooting range was awash with activity as the arena played host to the National Gun Owners Association (NGAO- Kenya’s) first shooting contest this year.
The Saturday event which was sponsored by Firlcom Network kicked off with 28 Safety officers firing it off on Friday, followed by the main match on Saturday.
This year’s club match opener was a tier 1 International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) sanctioned match, with over 70 participants drawn from defense forces, civilians and Team Coast.
This and other subsequent matches are aimed at building capacity officials, who will run the 2021 IDPA African Championship to be hosted in Kenya.
“ We aspire to elevate every other monthly shoot to an IDPA sanctioned match, as a build up to the Tier 4 IDPA African Championship to be held in Kenya in September this year.” Said competitions captain Geoffrey Pesa.
“We also intend to increase the number of safety officers in Kenya from 54 to 100 by end of July 2021.” Added Pesa.
The African Championship tourney was supposed to be held in Kenya in September 2020, but the plan was shelved because of the Covid19 restrictions which were put in place by the Kenyan government.
The lifting of the ban on sporting activities in the country gave Team Kenya the leeway to proceed which the preparations for the first ever IDPA continental championship, to be held in the country, outside of South Africa.
