A former employee of the Kenya National Police DT Sacco has filed a lawsuit seeking Sh26.4 million in damages.

Lawrence Churchil Omondi, who was employed in January 2013, claims that his termination in April 2023, was unlawful and discrimination against him due to his mental condition.

According to court documents filed at the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Kakamega Tuesday, Omondi says he served in various roles, including branch manager and credit officer, demonstrating dedication and exceptional performance.

However, he alleges that his career took a downward turn after being diagnosed with bipolar mania, a condition characterized by mood disorders, impulsivity and insomnia.

"The claimant was a model employee who consistently met and exceeded expectations," says his lawyer Billy Janji. "His termination was not only unjust but also a violation of his rights as outlined in the Constitution and the Employment Act. Police Sacco chose to ignore his medical condition, framing his dismissal under the false pretext of gross misconduct."

He contends that the Sacco leadership was motivated by the desire to conceal corrupt activities within the institution.

"The claimant, as a professional accountant and former manager, had knowledge of questionable transactions and covert schemes involving senior officials. His health condition made him an easy target...."

"This case is not just about the money; it's about seeking justice for the emotional and psychological pain my client has endured," argues the lawyer.
