Boost for smallholder farmers as Lusaka launches Sh105 million project

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has launched a Sh105 million National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) set to benefit approximately 227,000 smallholder farmers across 45 wards.
The project aims to enhance agricultural productivity, improve market access, and foster sustainable agricultural practices by farmers.
Lusaka said the project seeks to boost the incomes and livelihoods of the smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of Bungoma's economy.
The governor was speaking at the Mabanga Agricultural Training Centre during the launch of the project.

"As a county government, we have prioritised transforming the agriculture sector to be vibrant and competitive. This is an important building block for wealth, employment creation, and economic growth," he said.
"Our farmers are the lifeline of our economy. This project is designed to empower them with the necessary resources, skills, and support to increase their productivity and profitability," he added.
The five-year project, co-funded by both the World Bank and the county government, aims to increase market participation and value chains for smallholder farmers in sectors such as dairy, chicken, coffee, banana, and avocado.
"The NAVCDP project will establish 45 ward-based Saccos to enhance smallholder farmers' access to affordable credit, transitioning them from subsistence to commercial farming. Additionally, it will support 26 farmer marketing cooperatives," Lusaka said.
The project also includes the involvement of 315 youth as agri-preneurs to support extension services, addressing part of the unemployment issue in the county.
Governor Lusaka reiterated the county government's commitment to support the agricultural sector and ensure successful implementation of the project.
"We are dedicated to creating an enabling environment for our farmers to thrive. The NAVCDP is a testament to our commitment to agricultural development and the well-being of our people," he said.
