Badminton: Kisumu ready for 2024 Nyanza Badminton Open tournament

Kisumu City is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the Nyanza Badminton Open Tournament, a regional highlight scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, at the Aga Khan Hall.

The tournament is expected to draw badminton enthusiasts from Kenya and across East Africa, with participants from schools, universities, clubs, and corporate teams all taking part.

The event marks a significant moment for local badminton, offering players a platform to compete at a high level amid a growing interest in the sport.

Tournament director John Apollo shared his high expectations for this year’s tournament, emphasizing its role in promoting local talent and inspiring young players.

“This event will showcase the rising popularity of badminton in Kenya, while giving our local players the opportunity to compete and shine,” said Apollo.

He also noted the resilience of the players, who have maintained their commitment to the sport despite a five-year ban imposed on Kenya by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

“Our players have shown remarkable dedication, and we continue to appeal to the Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen to help resolve this ban so our athletes can fully realize their potential on the global stage,” he added.

The tournament follows the successful City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge in Kampala, where Apollo John secured a runner-up finish in the Men’s Singles Veterans category and Fred Nyaribo reached the Men’s Singles semifinals, showcasing Kenya’s talent and determination.

The Nyanza Badminton Open will feature top-seeded players, including current National Badminton League (NBL) seed one, Fabian Derrick, alongside seasoned players like Naomi Wandili and Commonwealth Games representative Sammy Sikoyo. Ugandan star Babu Alex is also expected to make an appearance, promising thrilling matches.

“I’m excited to compete and meet other top players in Kisumu,” Derrick shared, expressing his eagerness for the tournament. “It’s a great opportunity to test our skills and bring out the best in each other.”
