Bandari and Mombasa Aquatics dominate inter clubs meet

Bandari and Mombasa Aquatics splashed their way to victory as they dominated the Mombasa inter clubs swimming championship that concluded over the weekend at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa.

Bandari, one of the country's successful swimming clubs amassed 159 medals to win the men category while Mombasa Aquatics took charge of the women category with 79 medals.

In the men category, Bandari under coach Fakry Mansoor had 72 gold, 47 silver and 40 bronze with Mombasa Aquatics settling for the second spot with 97 medals that included 46 gold and 32 and 19 silver and bronze.

Another Mombasa club, Blue Ocean claimed third spot with four gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze for a total of 40 medals.

Nairobi's Strathmore University, Otters and NetGen Multi sports academy did not stamp their authority.

In women category, Mombasa Aquatics led with 79 medals that had 35 gold, 24 silver and 20 bronze as Bandari settled for the second position with 64 medals that included 26 gold, 24 silver and 14 bronze.

Blue Ocean sealed the top three position with 17 medals that included 15 gold and two bronze.

In the individual performance, youthful Stephen Ndegwa smashed a 10-year-old meet record at the gala.

Ndegwa was the shinning star after he set a new record in the boys 18 years and over in the 100m butterfly race.

The Bandari swimming club swimmer splashed his way to victory with a new time of 56.44 to erase Issa Abdalla's previous record of 57.45 set on May 30, 2014.

Ikbal Muhammad who was club less came in second with a time of 1.46.13 to claim the second position.

Ndegwa's splendid performance extended to the men 18 years and over 4x100m relay after he steered his team to victory.

The Bandari swimming crew that comprises of Ndegwa, John Paul Makona, Swaleh Talib and Trevor Mwamisi won the race after clocking 4.41.19.

Another celebrated Kenyan girl Maria Bianchi of Blue Ocean swim club was in a class of her own after she won the women 18 years and over 400m freestyle in 4.38.39.

At the end of day one, Bandari swimming club had dominated most of the races with Blue Oceaners and Mombasa Aquatics on their neck.

Mahin Patel of Bandari claimed the boys 14/15 years 400m freestyle with a time of 5.25.99 with his club mate Sheikh Hashim claiming the boys 16/17 years 400m freestyle with a time of 4.58.45.

Bandari's Swaleh Talib won the boys 18 years and over 400m freestyle after returning with a time of 4.39.07.

Blue Ocean crew of Kanabar Riyan, Trever Odhiambo, Said Amir and Sameh Mahmoud triumphed in boys 8/9 years 4x100m relays with a time of 6.14.72.
