After a six-month rest, the 2024/2025 Kenya Polo Association season opens with the Northern Kenya Polo Championships this weekend in Timau.

The ongoing heavy rains could hamper the opening competition, but the Northern Kenya Polo Club (NKPC) captain Casimir Gross said the event will go on as planned, should the weather allow.

“Our horses have had enough rest and the recent decrease in rains is likely to extend to this weekend. And that could allow the event to proceed as had earlier planned,” he said.

He was somehow worried that some players might not grace the occasion as they had not prepared their horses well.

“Most players are yet to fully train their horses. It means their fitness is doubtful since they have not played any meaningful chukkas in the past weeks,” said Casimir who is Kenya’s top polo player.

Kenya has four polo clubs in Manyatta Polo Club in Gilgil, Nairobi Polo Club, Timau Sports Club and Northern Kenya Polo Club in Timau.

The competition has three divisions of the event with the main competition being Timau Stores Cup.

Others are the Challenge Cup and Abadan Cup in the second and third divisions respectively.

On their part, Gross confirmed that NKPC players have managed to train for three weekends but has not played any serious tournament ahead of the season opening competition.

Competitions

  1. The Timau Stores Cup.
  2. The Challenger Trophy.
  3. The Abadan Cup.
