Serena Williams is often regarded as the best female tennis players of the Open Era and has been ranked No. 1 in the world for 319 weeks, the third-longest length of time behind Martina Navrotilova and Steffi Graf.

She was born in Saginaw, Michigan, along with her older sister Venus Williams who is also a professional tennis player.

She started playing tennis when she was three, but in 1995 when she was in ninth-grade, her father, Richard, took control of all her coaching.

It was an unorthodox move but has clearly worked, with both her and her sister going on to have successful careers in the world of tennis.

She began intense tennis training at the age of three, and won the US Open in 1999, defeating Swiss player Martina Hingis.

By 2003 she had won all four major grand slam tournaments - US Open, French Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon - and had won a grand slam on all three major playing surfaces.

She has won 23 grand slam titles, an amazing return, and along with her sister Venus has had a brilliant career playing doubles as well.

Many of the finals she was played in have been against her older sister Venus, and in 2017 she won her 23rd grand slam title by defeating Venus in the Australian Open.

The pair met by chance in 2015, and the first time they met she asked him to move from the table he was sat at so her entourage could sit there.

He refused to move, and the rest is history.

Alexis said to Serena when she announced their engagement: "And you made me the happiest man on the planet."
