As Kenyan universities prepare for the Outdoor Games national play-offs next month, Masinde University of Science and Technology (MMUST) won the overall title of the Indoor Games hosted in their backyard over the weekend.

MMUST won the men's darts title after emerging runner-up in women's chess but were third in senior men and women's 3x3 basketball in the two-day competition that attracted 36 public and private universities.

Daystar University finished runner-up, ahead of Chuka, Kenyatta, Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), University of Nairobi (UON), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Technology (JKUAT), UON II, Kabarak, TUM II, Tharaka, Strathmore University and University of Eldoret in the overall standings.

Western Conference of Kenyan Universities (Universities from Western Kenya) won the overall title ahead of Rift Valley, Central, Coast, Nairobi North and Nairobi South.

The 36 institutions were competing in 13 disciplines including darts, chess, 3x3 men and women basketball, swimming, men and women rugby, table tennis, roll-ball, scrabble and badminton.

"Competing in these forums allows KUSF to be a source of molding and tapping talents in all disciplines to produce sportsmen and women who dominate in the national and international championships," Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Secretary General Alice Adalo said.

With the conclusion of the national play-offs, Adalo said teams are getting ready for the Outdoor Games that are set to kick-off next month at a venue that's yet to be announced.

"We have started preparations for the second stage of our extra-curricular activities in the coming weeks," said Adalo, who is also a lecturer at Maseno University.
