Jackson Siketa: Kabras Sugar's MVP ready to conquer National Sevens Circuit

Jackson Siketa, a rising star in Kenyan rugby, played a pivotal role in guiding Kabras Sugar to a dominant victory at the 2024 Dala Sevens at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, in Kisumu.

The Kenya U20 international and 2024 Africa Barthes Trophy champion, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the two-day tournament, showcasing his immense talent and potential as he continues to make his mark on the rugby scene.

Siketa’s outstanding performance was highlighted by his two tries and two conversions, which helped Kabras Sugar secure a commanding 24-5 win over Menengai Oilers in the final.

This victory not only earned Kabras the Dala Sevens title, but also propelled them to the top of the National Sevens Circuit standings with 61 points.

Reflecting on his stellar performance, Siketa attributed his success to intense preparation and teamwork.

“I focused on my basics-ball handling, speed, and positioning-and it paid off in the final. But it wasn’t just about me; the whole team worked together, and we executed our game plan perfectly,” said Siketa.

Siketa’s journey to the top has been nothing short of inspirational. He joined Kabras Sugar from Koyonzo Secondary School, where he had an illustrious career, being named MVP at both the KSSSA national and East Africa games last year.

His transition from school rugby to the senior level has been seamless, with his performances in the National Sevens Circuit demonstrating his rapid development.

Elly Okwemba, Siketa’s coach at Koyonzo, spoke highly of his former protégé, highlighting the youngster’s dedication and humility. “I first noticed Siketa when he was still in primary school. His potential was evident even then. When he joined Koyonzo, he was a humble, patient boy who was eager to learn. He didn’t make the first team immediately, but he never gave up. He was always ready to improve and put in the work,” Okwemba said.

Okwemba also praised Siketa’s academic discipline, noting that despite the demanding nature of rugby, Siketa excelled in his studies.

“He was on a rugby scholarship, which meant he never had to pay any fees, but that didn’t stop him from being a good student. His discipline on and off the field is what makes him special,” Okwemba added.

Siketa’s success story is also a testament to the support he received from Koyonzo’s former principal, Boaz Adit, who ensured that the talented young player had all the opportunities to thrive in both his academics and rugby career.

Adit, now at Otieno Oyoo High School in Kisumu, played a key role in facilitating Siketa’s scholarship, allowing him to focus on his rugby without financial worries.

Meanwhile, Kabras Sugar’s dominance at the Dala Sevens was further underscored by the inclusion of three of their players—Siketa, William Muhanji, and Derrick Ashiundu—in the tournament’s Impact Team.

They were joined by Dennis Abukuse and Beldad Ogeta from Menengai Oilers, Samuel Asati of KCB, and Musa Mugandi of MMUST.

As Kabras Sugar continues to assert its dominance in the National Sevens Circuit, Jackson Siketa’s rise serves as an inspiration to young players across the country.
