SCHOOLS: Koyonzo and Madira Girls crowned Western Region rugby champions

Koyonzo Secondary School and Madira Girls High School are the 2024 Western Region Rugby Sevens Champions.

Koyonzo who are the national secondary school boys' rugby champions redeemed themselves after a tough start and were crowned champions after a commanding 24-7 victory over Vihiga Boys in a thrilling final.

The match was a repeat of last year's final, and Koyonzo was determined to claim the title this time.

Their journey to the finals saw them overpower Kibabii with a 22-00 win in the quarterfinals and continue their impressive form with a 38-12 triumph over Musingu in the semifinals.

In the final, Koyonzo established a formidable lead with a 12-0 score by halftime. Despite Vihiga's efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, reducing the deficit to 12-7 with a try and conversion, Koyonzo's defense held firm.

They went on to score two more tries, both converted, sealing a 24-7 victory and clinching the championship.

In the girls' category, Madira Girls showcased their resilience and skill to claim the Western Region crown with a 15-05 win over Mbakalo Girls in the finals. Madira Girls faced Mwira in the quarterfinals and emerged victorious with a close 15-7 win.

After an appeal against Kimobo was dismissed, they secured a dominant 19-0 victory in the semifinals to book their place in the final.

In the final match against Mbakalo Girls, Madira Girls fought hard for a 15-5 win. Their perseverance and strategic play ensured they lifted the Western Region girls' crown.

Both Koyonzo Secondary School and Madira Girls demonstrated exceptional talent and determination, earning them the prestigious titles of Western Region Rugby Sevens champions.

Their victories are a testament to their hard work and dedication, setting a high standard for future competitions.
