St Mary’s School Yala is primed to defend their rugby sevens county title as the Siaya County Secondary School Term Two games kick off on June 19 at Chianda High School.
The reigning champions are not only focused on maintaining their county dominance but are also aiming for greater success at the regional and national levels.
Having established itself as a powerhouse in rugby, St Mary’s School Yala holds both the Siaya County and Nyanza Region titles.
Their remarkable journey last year saw them secure a bronze medal at the national finals, earning them a spot in the prestigious East Africa tournament held in Rwanda.
Yala head coach George Kerima believes that this year’s squad has the potential to surpass these achievements.

“We’ve had a phenomenal year, and the boys are hungry for more success,” said Kerima. “Last year was a breakthrough for us, but we believe we can better our performance this time around. Our preparation has been intense, and the team is more cohesive and determined than ever.”
Yala’s form has been impressive leading up to the county games. They recently dominated the Gem Yala Sub County games, defeating Maliera 43-05 and Sawagongo 38-00, showcasing their strength and readiness for the upcoming competition.
The Siaya County games will feature stiff competition, with several schools eager to challenge Yala’s supremacy.
In the boys’ category, the participating teams include Yala, Sawagongo, Chianda, Ambira, Ugenya, Bondo Township, Barding, and Sirembe.
The girls’ category will see teams from Sidindi, Bondo Township, Nyamira, Mbaga, and Nyakongo competing for the title.
Fans and players alike are eagerly anticipating the games, which promise to be an exciting showcase of rugby talent.
For St Mary’s School Yala, this tournament is not just about defending a title; it’s about upholding a legacy of excellence, hard work, and sportsmanship.
Kerima’s strategic expertise, combined with the players' relentless drive, will be crucial as they aim to extend their dominance beyond the county level.
With a team that has shown resilience and prowess on the field, Yala is poised to make another memorable run.
As the games commence at Chianda High School, all eyes will be on St Mary’s School Yala as they strive to reaffirm their status as the kings of rugby sevens in Siaya County and beyond.
