St Mary's School Yala begun their Nyanza Region Secondary School games on the front foot after thumping Cardinal Otunga 65-0 in a one-sided 15s rugby match played at Kisumu Boys High School grounds on Thursday.

The Siaya County champions led 34-0 at the half before finishing off 21-0 in the final half to take charge of Group B which also has Kisumu County champions Maseno School and Gekano.

Speaking after the win, Yala head coach Kenneth Mukok said they are taking a game at a time and their target remains getting to the finals.

Knowing very well that there is only one ticket to the nationals, Mukok said they have to get all their tactics right.

"It is a very good start for us, a big win that give us more confidence as we proceed slowly. Our goal remains the same, to get to the finals," said Mukok.

In their second match, Yala saw off Gekano 41-0 to top their pool with two wins.

In the same group, Maseno School hammered Gekano 29-0 ahead of the top of the table clash against St Mary's Yala on Friday.
