Constructon of Siyoi-Muruny dam underway in West Pokot.

West Pokot will see an enhanced water supply as Sh8 billion Siyoi-Muruny dam is set for completion by March 2025.

The dam is currently 72 per cent done and is expected provide 8.9 billion litres of water annually, serving an estimated 350,000 residents and irrigating 3,500 acres.

Located in Murkokoi village within the Rift Valley Drainage Basin, it draws water from the Muruny River.

With a storage capacity of 8.9 million cubic metres, the dam aims to distribute 38,880 cubic metres of water daily to areas including Kapenguria and Makutano.

Principal Secretary for Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho, who recently visited the site, expressed optimism about the project's progress.

"The Kapenguria-Muruny water supply project will not only alleviate water scarcity but also drive economic growth by providing water for irrigation and other agricultural activities," said Kimotho.

"It's not just about drinking water but also ensuring that our farmers have the resources they need to increase productivity."

The project includes a water treatment plant in Kabichbich town, an extensive pipeline network and water storage tanks.

The treatment plant will process 38,880 cubic metres of water daily, transported through a pipeline network stretching 127,226 metres and stored in tanks with a total capacity of 17,865 cubic metres.

Kimotho was joined by senior officials, including Irrigation Secretary Vincent Kabuti, CEC William Petot and National Water Chairman Symon Kimaru.

Pokot South Deputy County Commissioner Charles Akwanalo also led the local administration team in supporting the project.

Local leaders expressed confidence that the project will create jobs, improve the county's overall economic standing and enhance the quality of life for area residents.
