Mother cries for justice following daughter's death in Ngong

A mother in Ngong, Kajiado County, is crying for justice after her daughter died two weeks ago under unclear circumstances.

Daisy Nyakeru, 24, is said to have jumped to death from the fourth floor of a residential apartment. But the mother, Susan Mwangi Njeri refuses to believe the version and wants thorough investigations.

According to Njeri, her late daughter who was buried at Langata cemetery on Friday was in the company of a female friend and two men believed to be military officers.

A day earlier, Nyakeru had indicated to her mother that she had been invited for a job interview at The Hub in Karen. The interview was to be conducted by a woman.

Njeri said the deceased informed her that the woman was recruiting for a supermarket expected to be opened soon at Galleria.

Nyakeru according to the mother had worked at KFC in Hurlingham before she became jobless.

On the fateful day, Njeri recalls her daughter leaving the rented house at around 1.30 pm to attend the interview.

"She then requested some money, citing that she wanted to use it to buy some lunch for herself. I then send her some money," says Njeri.

Two hours later, Nyakeru called her mother informing her the interview had been cancelled by the interviewee and that she was passing through a friend's house in the neighbourhood and would head home later.

"My daughter called me again at around 8.49 pm and informed me that she had arrived at her friends' place in Ngong and indicated that she would get home later in the night," recounted Njeri.

A few minutes after 11 pm, Njeri says she received a call from a woman who introduced herself as a police officer from Ngong Police Station and informed her to present herself at the station immediately.

On arrival, Njeri said that she met three male officers at the report desk. A few minutes later, a police officer who had summoned her, appeared at the station in a police vehicle.

Njeri said that she saw two military officers disembark from the vehicle that had on board the officer who had summoned her. According to her one of the military officers was handcuffed.

She claims two women also alighted from the same vehicle and were led to police cells.

At the station, Njeri says she was informed by police that her daughter had been involved in an accident and taken to Ngong sub-county hospital where the body of her daughter.

She said that she was informed by a female officer the people who were brought to the station were the ones who were with Nyakeru and were being treated as the prime suspects.

"The officer told me that they had recorded statements saying that her daughter got angry and jumped from the fourth floor and died instantly," claimed Njeri.

She recorded a statement under OB 04/01/08/2024 on the same day her daughter was buried. A postmortem showed that Nyakeru sustained multiple injuries on the head, chest, and abdomen which led to her death.

Njeri maintains that she is not convinced that her daughter jumped to death. She is reading mischief in the whole saga since those arrested have been freed from custody without being charged.
