Hi Chris,

Why does my fiance have such a desire for expensive designer watches? Posh cars? And go to costly bars? I try to persuade him that we should save for the future, but he ignores me!

Expensive Tastes

Chris says,

Hi, Expensive Tastes!

Not because they're better, that's for sure! After all, a Rolex is no more accurate than a cheap digital watch. And the taste of the drinks in that amazingly expensive bar isn't going to move the earth.

It's all because people treat you differently if they think you're rich. And are much more likely to push around someone they see as low status. I'll bet even you find yourself giving way to people in expensive cars?

So people buy status symbols to tell people they're posh and should be treated well. This only works in the short term, of course, because as people get to know you better, they can judge your real worth. And if your status symbols don't match your real status, they'll think you're superficial.

So why does your fiance keep buying them?

It's because men know that women admire men with high social status. And who are rich, intelligent and have good taste. Including you!

So if your fiance spends ridiculous amounts of money on bling, he's saying he can afford it and has the taste to enjoy it, so he must be a good partner, so you should stick with him!

And if he casually chooses an expensive wine on a date, it's not because it's expensive, but because it's the perfect wine to go with your meal. How thoughtful of you. Isn't it nice to be with someone who appreciates the finer things in life? And who doesn't have to worry about money?

When he talks about the wonderful craftsmanship of Rolex, he's really trying to show you how intelligent he is. And he buys expensive whisky to suggest he has good taste.

Hopefully, he'll eventually realise it's all a ridiculous waste of money. And start listening to your thoughts on long-term financial planning.

All the best,

Chris
