Kindiki intensifies forays into Mt Kenya West, preaches unity ahead of 2027

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki intensified his forays into the Mt Kenya West region, where he preached unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His trip to Nyeri County, Kieni Constituency, marked his third engagement in the West region since being crowned the Mt Kenya spokesperson by elders from the Embu, Meru and Gikuyu communities in Kiambu.
Prior to the visit, he had visited Murang’a county, Maragua Constituency, where he inspected the ongoing construction of the Gakoigo stadium.
The trips are part of the Deputy President’s renewed efforts to rally the region, which enjoys an acrimonious relationship with the current administration, behind President William Ruto.

Kindiki’s forays to the West also come following sustained criticism from political observers who questioned his choice to camp in the East, in efforts previously seen as aimed at dividing the vote-rich Mt Kenya voting bloc.
Prior to his tour of Murang’a, the second in command had made approximately 30 trips to the East region of the mountain, visiting Meru 15 times. He had also been to Tharaka Nithi and Embu seven times each.
The DP, however, claimed that the inroads were important to consolidate his support base before moving on to other parts of the country.
And speaking in Kieni yesterday, Kindiki called on leaders from the Mt Kenya region not to disregard orders by elders to unite the region in spite of the existing political differences.
He was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina and Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira among others.
Kindiki told off leaders who had previously called for a severance of ties between the East and West for political gain, noting that the region was one.
“I have clear orders to unite Mt. Kenya region. We might be affiliated to different formations but the elders requested me to ensure peaceful political contests. Aspirants will sell their agenda and voters will decide who to vote for,” he said.
“Mt Kenya is one. There is no East or West. We cannot divide it. It has always been one. It was one during the leadership of Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta. It will remain one. We must protect and bequeath it as one to the next
generations,” added Kindiki.
The DP observed that with the region united, he would ensure that no one perpetrated any form of violence against their brothers and sisters owing to their political affiliations. He also vowed to continue pushing for deserving development.
“We should not allow violence to take over our politics. We are not a region known for violence despite political differences. We are wealth creators not destroyers. We should not attack each other. Everyone should sell their agenda and voters will decide. The winner serves all and the loser waits for their time,” he reiterated.
The Deputy President highlighted the development projects allocated billions of money by the government, promising to ensure more for Nyeri County and Mt Kenya region.
While launching the construction of Chaka Township roads, he highlighted some of the development projects allocated to Nyeri County, such as Sh45 billion for the construction of 775 kilometres of roads spread across the six constituencies in the devolved unit.
He noted that modern markets are also ongoing with most nearing completion and that the county has also benefitted from last mile electricity connection with 32, 000 homes already benefitting and another 12, 000 set to be connected following an additional allocation of 650 million shillings.
The DP said he had heeded the elders’ request not to engage in insults but to be a unifying voice looking after the welfare of the region and the whole country.
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi said they will return the favour at the right time, assuring the DP of their support. “You have stood with us since the time of Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta. We will return this favour this time around to our people of Meru and Tharaka Nithi,” added Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi.
