About 80 schools that were destroyed during the El Nino rains in Wajir County will be renovated before the beginning of the first term in 2024.

This is according to Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura who made the remarks while touring the area with other government officers on Wednesday on a mission to distribute relief food.

"More than 80 schools were affected by floods here in Wajir and the government is repairing them before the schools reopen in January," Mwaura said.

More than 11,000 households were affected by the floods in Wajir and seven people lost their lives.

Mwaura said that the food aid will continue streaming to various areas that were largely affected following a Sh150 million donation from the US government.

Other government officials on the tour were secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau and Principal Secretary for Cabinet Affairs Dr Idris Dokota.

11 trucks loaded with bags of beans, maize and rice were flagged off at the NCPB in Wajir Town for distribution to various areas within the county.

Some 2,000 cartons of assorted medicine were donated by Kenya Defense Forces.

Dokota assured residents that the main issues raised including damaged roads will be escalated to the Cabinet.

"The infrastructure has degraded and we know the disruption when roads are damaged and we have heard your request for these roads to be fast-tracked," she stated.

Later, the government officials travelled to the Lafaley area in Tarbaj Constituency where they distributed the food aid.
