Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers have arrested Peter Odhiambo Agoro, the Consortium of Civil Societies Chairperson in Kenya, for alleged bribery.
Agoro is accused of demanding a Sh3 million bribe from the Chief Executive of a state corporation, the Commission said.
The money was reportedly sought as a "facilitation fee" to prevent Agoro from pursuing and publicising claims of procurement malpractices against the said CEO.
Negotiations allegedly led to the bribe being reduced to Sh2 million, with the first installment of Sh1.5 million is due today, and the remaining Sh500,000 will be paid later.
Unaware that the CEO had reported the extortion attempt, Agoro was apprehended after receiving the first installment.
He is currently being held at the EACC Integrity Centre, and will later be transferred to Kilimani Police Station pending further action.
