17 pupils dead, 14 injured in Nyeri school fire

At least 17 pupils have been confirmed dead at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri County.

According to Police Spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango who confirmed the incident, the victims were burned beyond recognition.

Some other 14 leaners have sustained serious burns in the Thursday night inferno.

At the same time, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed having taken 11 of the injured pupils to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital.

"Additionally, the Kenya Red Cross is providing psychosocial support services to the pupils, teachers, and affected families and has set up a tracing desk at the school," it said.

The cause of the fire was yet to be established at the time of publishing.
