Ekeza Sacco founder David Kariuki Ngare alias Gakuyo has been arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

Gakuyo, in a video seen by The Standard, claimed he did not know the motive behind his arrest.

"They say I cannot leave the country and I just think there is some revenge somewhere. I'm happy there might be an opportunity to see the judge and to be told what case I have. I'm at the DCI at the airport," he said.

Authorities at JKIA have also confirmed to The Standard that Gakuyo was at the DCI offices in JKIA. They, however, did not disclose why he was restricted from leaving the country.

Gakuyo irregularly transferred Sh1.5 billion from a troubled Savings and Credit cooperative society to his account between 2015 and 2017.

The funds were transferred to an account only he and his wife could access.
