The police in Embakasi, Nairobi, are looking for a 36-year-old man suspected of killing his former girlfriend.

The lifeless body of Winfred Mwende was found in a house in Tassia estate last Tuesday by her sister.

The body has multiple stab wounds, in the chest and neck.

A mobile phone the suspect is said to have bought Mwende just before their relationship ended was the only thing missing from the victim's house, according to the police, who have consequently linked the man to the woman's killing.

The man has since gone into hiding with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) vowing not to rest until they get a hold of him.

On Friday, detectives visited the suspect's place of work and house but did not find him.

Last person

Sources told the Standard that the suspect was the last person to communicate with the woman on the day she died.

The man, who works in a factory in Embakasi, is said to have been infuriated after Mwende ended their relationship a month ago.

The sources said Mwende's ex-lover was even more furious after he learnt she was in another relationship with a man who was known to the suspect.

The sources said the suspect called Mwende several times and threatened her after he learnt her new boyfriend was using the mobile phone he had gifted her.

Neighbours who have recorded statements with the police said they saw a man, who was a frequent visitor to Mwende's house, arrive on the day she died.

They said there was no commotion in the house.

When DCI crime scene personnel arrived, they found the house in disarray an indication of a violent confrontation between the two.

"Nothing was stolen other than the mobile phone. We believe the phone has something to do with the murder," said a senior investigator.
