Dagoretti High School closed following student unrest

Students at Dagoretti High School in Nairobi have been sent home following unrest on Sunday evening.

Teachers who spoke to The Standard confided that scores of students were injured following dispute with rivals after sporting event in the school. Before the incident, the school was hosting a basketball competition between it and counterparts from Sudan and had differed over the results.

In the evening fracas that lasted for hours, it is reported that some school properties were destroyed forcing the school administration to take action.

"The school management reached a decision to close the school as a measure of ensuring student's safety and to avoid more destruction at the school, "said a board of management official.

Police spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango was deployed to the school to quell the fracas and are still investigating the matter.

She appealed to the students to desist from using unrests as a way of settling their differences but engage school administration in finding a solution to their problems.

John Thairu, who is the chairman of Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) in Dagoretti subcounty and principal of Ruthimitu mixed secondary school in Gachui condemned the incident and called on peace and harmony among students in the subcounty.

"As we approach the end of the year and the sitting of KCSE exams for form students, it's better if students can concentrate on their studies and avoid riots,",Thairu said on phone.
