Kenya Airports Authority announces postponement of KAWU 7-day strike notice.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced that the 7-day strike notice issued by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has been postponed to allow for further discussions.

The decision follows a press statement from KAWU Secretary General Moses Ndiema, dated August 17.

In a statement on Sunday, August 18, KAA said the postponement was made to allow time for ongoing negotiations.

"The strike notice has been postponed to give the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, KAA management and KAWU time to reach a mutually agreeable solution," said KAA.

The authority assured the public that airport operations remain normal.

The postponement follows the union's threat to strike starting Monday, August 18, in response to a proposed deal with India's Adani Airports Holdings.

The union has expressed concerns about potential job losses and the hiring of non-Kenyan workers.

"We are concerned that this deal could result in significant job losses and the employment of non-Kenyan staff," the union said in its strike notice, referring to the deal as the "intended sale" of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

The government has maintained the airport is not for sale and no final decision has been made regarding the proposed public-private partnership.
