Non-profit firms give stationery aid to learners in slum areas

Learners in various informal settlement areas are all smiles after receiving uniform and stationery donations from well wishers.

This comes at a time when most of the households in the rural areas are still grappling with the effects of flooding following the heavy rains experienced in April and May.

The exercise was spearheaded by a partnership between Ta'awun Trust, Angel Welfare and Education Trust which donates learning materials and school wear to boost the learners' self-esteem.

Speaking during the exercise, Yahya Dafala, Angel Welfare and Education Trust chairman says the exercise has been happening in Nairobi County since 2017, and aims to extend to other counties.

"It is very devastating to see pupils going to school with gumboots and some do not have a pair of shoes at all just because their parents have been affected by the recent floods that have been witnessed in the past weeks which led to the ongoing demolitions," he said.

So far the non-profit organization has been giving donations Kibra, Mukuru kwa Ruben, Korogocho as well as Majengo slums.

After heavy floods affected the city last month, the county Government issued an order for the demolition of all houses that are built 30m from rivers, to pave the way for the flood waters.
