The National Police Service has suspended a traffic police officer who was captured on camera allegedly taking a bribe from Public Service Vehicles in Nairobi's Buruburu area.

In the now-viral video, the officer stood strategically on the road waving for the passing vehicles to stop, before he stretching his hands to meet the conductors who handed over 'something' and sped off.

In a statement on Friday, the police unit said that they had identified the police officer from the video.

"The officer, Haron Mwangi, attached to traffic within Buruburu Police Station has been suspended from the Traffic Police Unit with immediate effect, and proceedings for his dismissal are ongoing," stated NPS.

In the video seen by The Standard, the officer stood on the side of the road and the motorists slowed down while approaching him before they could stretch their hands toward him, and more vehicles followed in the same route.

The police unit has praised members of the public for collaborating in highlighting corruption within the force.
