An estimated 180 golfers are expected to light up the season in a 'year opener' golf tournament to be played at the par 71 Nyali golf and Country club course in Mombasa County this Saturday.

Mombasa lawyer Provia Odhiambo has staged the Lady Captain's tournament that has attracted golfers from the home club with others from the Seafront course Mombasa, Diamond Leisure in Kwale county, Vipingo Baobab Ridge and Malindi in Kilifi County who will be joined by their colleagues from up country golf clubs.

According to the programme the dress code will be pink and white on the course and an African attire off the course.

Odhiambo said the tournament that tees off from 6.30 am from both the first and tenth tee off boxes will be the first event of the year in the esteemed club golfing calendar and it's a special day that marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting golfing season.

"As Lady Captain of Nyali golf club, I am honored to welcome you all to participate, it is my pleasure to invite you to the Lady Captain's tournament. The incredible support from our sponsors and the members of the club both ladies and men has been truly overwhelming. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to making this event a reality, "said Odhiambo.

She further thanked fellow golfers among them Mary Kandu, Hilda Mugure, and Zaituni Mohammed, who formed the planning committee and worked tirelessly to ensure the day was perfectly organized.

"Additionally, I am deeply grateful to the Ladies Committee for tying up all the loose ends on such short notice. We are looking forward to a day of fun. There are also great prizes to be won in more than 14 categories, making it a day full of opportunities for all participants. And as we kick off the golfing year, I am optimistic that it can only get better from here. Let's enjoy this wonderful occasion together and set the tone for an amazing season, "said Odhiambo.

This 18 holes 'day long tournament comes to the club after last month's East African Inter-parliamentary games golf tournament that briefly interrupted when a swarm of bees invaded the practicing range course that caused panic but was swiftly contained by the club's emergency team.

Malindi country club lady Captain Hamida Chidagaya and her Diani's Diamond Leisure club's colleague Carolin Mokaya are expecting their strong teams to the tournament that also has Men golfers who will be in the subsidiary side.

The host club expects to field veteran senior golfers among them Christine Ockotch, Alice Wahome, Jayne Githere, Terry Odoo and Florence Karimi who are expected to produce sterling performance.

And after this, the club's Captain Dinesh Sasan will be hosting his two days Captain's prize tournament next Saturday 18th, and Sunday 19th, January where more action is expected.
