Kambasome tourney attracts over 160 golfers at Sea-Link Mombasa Course

Some 160 golfers will be flexing their muscles for top prizes in the ‘Kambasome’ golf tournament teeing off at the over a century old par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa Golf Course around the vicinity of the Island’s downtown Kizingo in Mombasa County this weekend.

Apart from winners’ prizes lined up in various categories, the golfers will be particularly eager to sink a rare “hole in one” at the par 3-12th hole to walk home with a brand-new latest Toyota Harrier car, courtesy of Khushi Motors.

During the same event last year, Coast veteran Golfer Martin Wahome was the only golfer who got closer to grabbing the Car after his shot landed only 1.1 feet away from the proposed hole.

The 18 holes tournament that brings together golfers from the Home Club, Nyali , Diani’s Diamond Leisure, Kilifi’s Vipingo Baobab, Malindi, Machakos, and others from the Central Region has been organized by the ‘Wakwitu’ golfing community.

‘Wakwitu’ Golf Captain and host Club Director Joseph Kitema said the aim of the event is to promote and celebrate the ‘Kamba’ culture and urged other sects around Mombasa and its environs to come and join the Community in the celebration.

“We shall have fabulous prizes for the winners in various categories, a lot of ‘Kamba’ cultural activities, local foods, drinks, Music and dances throughout to make the day full of entertainment, “said Kitema.

He pointed out that the dress code on the course will be white and an African wear with a touch of yellow in the evening during the prize giving ceremony and appealed for more sponsorship saying the door was still open.

One of the event Organizers Faith Muteti who is also the Kenya Navy Golf Lady Captain said she has invited many of her lady golf colleagues across the Country who have confirmed their participation in the tournament.

The event is being supported by Munyao,Muthama & Kashindi (MMK) advocates, Deansbrook School, Khushi Motors, Denri Africa, KPC,My Clinic, ‘Wakwitu’ Golfers, Friends of ‘Kambasome’, and Andy Golf Pro Shop among others.

Club Chairman Paul Munyao has urged golfers and supporters to turn out in large numbers promising it will be a day full of celebrations of Culture with diversity and making friendship.

"We are ready, the weather is excellent and the course is playing on the spot. Our Club prides itself in diversity featuring various tribes, culture, Religion and different ages and that's what Golf is all about by bringing people together and this weekend again it’s going to be a sterling event. Mombasa Golf Club will always strive to be one of the most desirable private members’ clubs in Kenya in terms of golf course, quality of service and friendly culture, "said Munyao.

During the same event last year, home club’s left-handed golfer Peter Cheruiyot emerged the overall winner on an excellent 41 stableford points beating a team of 180 golfers.

Elvis Nduati was the Men winner with a countback score of 40 points, tying on the same score with Joel Mochanga, who was the runner-up and left-handed golfer Elijah Ibua was third by a point behind.

Machakos Golf Club's lady golfer Scola Onsonga was the Lady winner on 40 points while home club’s Caroline Munyi carded 33 points for the runners up slot and Faith Muteti of Kenya Navy Golf Club was third with 32 points.

The ‘Kambasome’ team winner was Petronilah Kalee with 36 points while Paul Munyao on 35 points and Joseph Kitema with 33 points finished second and third respectively.

Mombasa’s 9-hole course founded in 1911 is located in Island’s downtown Kizingo is surrounded by a beautiful Coral Reef and white sandy Beach, with great views across to the Mombasa harbor entrance and beyond into the Indian Ocean.

The course is a true gem among Golfing destinations, providing a remarkable experience for Golfers in the stunning Coastal City of Mombasa in Mombasa County.
