Nyanchama sustains commendable run at Ruiru

Mercy Nyanchama dominated the Ruiru Ladies Open tournament on Thursday with a neat score of 77 Gross.

The handicap 2, elite golfer from Njoro Golf and Country Club prevailed over 142 lady golfers to win and secure back-to-back victories after winning the Nanyuki Ladies Open a fortnight ago.

Nyanchama played in the last flight alongside a rich flight of other elite lady golfers such as Joyce Wanjiru, Sarah Kanyereri and Margaret Njoki.

"Let me thank the Ruiru Sports Club management for keeping the course in great shape. It contributed towards my stellar performance as I executed good shots and even spun the ball on the holding greens," she said in her speech.

Serah emerged as the Gross winner second with 78 Gross while seasoned golfer Mwongeli Nzioka came in third with 79 Gross points.

In the nett category, Martha Vincent won the nett prize with a score of 67 nett. Judy Nyambura came in second with 70 Nett.

Category B saw Ivy Katee claim the top honors with 91 Gross ahead of Margaret Waweru upon carding 94 Gross as Jane Alice Mutuota won the Gross winner third prize with 95 Gross.

Limuru Golf and Country Club's Hannah Gatu bagged the Nett winner prize with 69 Nett as Rose Mwarania came in second also on 69 Nett.

In category C, Emma Gachomba topped with 64 Nett, and Cynthia Makena was second with 68 Nett. Ann Jacob settled for third place with 73 Gross.

Shirleen Wanjiku won the Junior Prize. Margaret Njoki won the Longest Drive Prize, and Tabitha Kiragu won the Nearest to the Pin prize.

Nine twos were registered during the tournament by Stella Ondimu and Margaret Njoki who won 19 golf balls each.

The colourful tournament was sponsored by Croton Motors, Finso Africa, Intercity Secure Homes, CIC, Aurora, Workpay, Jada, Stella-HR, FloGarden, Taso, Wine and Modern tents.

Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Chairman Jane Babsa Nzibo, graced the prize-giving gala and said, "I would like to urge the highly handicapped lady golfers to work on lowering their handicaps to ensure that they play more competitively."
