As women celebrate Mother's Day today, handicap 35 Ann Mathenge is a happy lady in Nakuru city this time round.

This is because she beat a field of 102 golfers to win the Ladies Open Golf Championships after posting a total nett of 73 at Nakuru Golf Club on Friday.

And as she basks in glory on a day like today, Mathenge said: "This is a big surprise on a weekend of Mother's Day and on the third day of my play after four years at my handicap while playing with long hitters who encouraged me to play o."

She posted 36 nett in the first nine and 37 in the back nine ahead of experienced Ann Ndwati who managed a total of 75 nett (39, 34) in an event that opened doors for a series of senior competitions at the club up to the end of next month.

Njeri Korir came as second runners up at 75 nett with Robin Magerer who posted a total of 71 nett (38,33) scooping the Subsidiary Men Title to walk with his head high in the ladies' tournament.

Playing off the scratch, Zaheer Fazal emerged runners up with 72 nett (of Subsidiary Men Winner) ahead of handicap nine Stephen Gachiu whom he beat by a net.
