Kenya will leave nothing to chance when they face Rwanda in their second Group A match in the AFCON U20 CECAFA qualifiers.

This follows a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Tanzania at the KMC Stadium.

The Rising Stars, coached by Salim Babu, made a strong start to their campaign and will be looking to build on the momentum in their upcoming clash on Thursday.

In their opening game, Kenya got off to an ideal start, with Kelvin Wangaya striking from a free-kick in the 24th minute, giving Tanzanian goalkeeper Anthony Mpemba no chance.

The hosts struggled to break down a disciplined Kenyan defense in the first half, and Kenya capitalised on their advantage after the interval when Omondi Odhiambo doubled the lead in the 66th minute.

Tanzania rallied late, pulling one goal back through substitute Rahim Mkinkange’s free kick, but Kenya’s resilience saw them secure the three points.

Reflecting on the match, head coach Salim Babu was pleased with his team’s fast start.

"I thank God that we started the game well in the first half and got a goal, which is what we were looking for. The game plan was to get early goals to reduce the pressure on us," Babu said.

He also acknowledged the challenges posed by Tanzania’s long-ball strategy in the second half, but credited his team for holding on.

With their sights now set on Rwanda, Kenya will be aiming to maintain their winning form and take another step toward qualification when they play next on Thursday.

Babu also highlighted the importance of the tournament for showcasing the talent of Kenyan players, particularly those looking to secure opportunities abroad.

Kenya are second in Group A with three points, same as leaders Sudan who thrashed Djibouti 3-1.
