Kenya’s Junior Starlets wrapped up their U-17 World Cup camp in emphatic fashion, securing a commanding 4-1 victory over CF Intercity Femenino in a friendly match on Monday at the Albir Grounds, Spain.

Valerine Nekesa got the Starlets off to a flying start, opening the scoring in the 18th minute after latching onto a perfectly timed pass from Joan Ogola, who created space on the flank.

However, CF Intercity Femenino responded just before halftime, equalizing in the 45th minute to leave the teams level at 1-1 as they headed into the break.

The Junior Starlets came out stronger in the second half, with Quinter Odiwuor restoring their lead early in the period. Odiwuor’s brilliant solo run down the wing ended with a clinical finish, making it 2-1.

The Kenyan side maintained their intensity, and Lorna Faith extended the lead in the 86th minute with a superb strike into the top corner, leaving the opposing goalkeeper with no chance.

The Starlets sealed their dominance in the final moments, with Valencia Joy Angela adding the fourth goal. After Jane Kweyu’s initial effort was parried by the goalkeeper, Angela was quick to pounce on the rebound and slot the ball home, capping off a remarkable 4-1 win.

This victory marks the end of their European camp as they gear up for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The Junior Starlets are scheduled to travel to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, where they will play their final friendly against the host nation as part of their continued preparations for the global tournament.

Head coach Ben Nyangweso was pleased with the team’s performance, noting the importance of these matches in sharpening their tactics and building match fitness. "The girls showed great character and teamwork today. These friendlies are vital for our preparation as we head into the World Cup, and I'm confident we’re on the right track," said Nyangweso.

Kenya’s Junior Starlets are set to face tough competition in the group stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. They will open their campaign against England on October 18, followed by a clash with Korea DPR on October 20, and will round off the group stage with a game against Mexico on October 24.

The World Cup, which runs from October 16 to November 3, 2024, will provide a platform for the Starlets to showcase their talents on the world stage as they look to make history for Kenya in women's football.
