Mathare United's fight to avoid relegation from the 2022-2023 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League season was dealt a big blow on Saturday after losing 1-0 to KCB Football Club at Ruaraka Grounds.

Musa Masika scored the solitary goal in the 60th minute as the bankers went home with maximum points.

The defeat left the Slum Boys second last in the standings with 22 points, eight points off safety with three matches left until the end of the season.

As it stands and with the poor form of the club, Mathare's only solution would be to finish above Wazito in order to play in the relegation and promotion playoffs with the third ranked team from the National Super League.

Wazito who will be playing on Sunday against Bandari in Mombasa are a point above Mathare United.

Mathare United have been struggling to find their foot way back top among the best teams since 2021 where they have not finished above 15th in the standings.

During the 2020-2021 season, Mathare finished 15th with 30 points, four points above the relegation zone.

Last year, Mathare was relegated after dishing three walkovers.

Mathare issued three walkovers against Sofapaka, Ulinzi Stars and Bandari.

In April, Club chairman Bob Munro, through a letter, laid bare the dire situation the 2008 champions are facing even as he dropped the bombshell that the team will not play today's match against Bandari.

Munro, the club cited financial constraints as the reason for issuing the walkover.

However, the reinstated FKF last year declared the 2021-2022 season null and void handing Mathare a life line and second chance.

Fast forward to today, the second chance seems worthless to the Slum Boys fans who are looking at another relegation battle that will go down to the wire.
