Mombasa Ladies team was crowned the 2020 Coast region Jamhuri Day football tournament champions on Saturday in Hola town, Tana River County.

The Mombasa Ladies, who are coached by former Lake Warriors player Joseph Oyoo, won the trophy with an unbeaten record. In the final match, the winners however needed penalty shootouts to win 4-2 over the host Tana River ladies after a goalless draw at the normal time.

Mercy Sewer, Mercy Masika, Cameron Seeks and Amina Fondo scored for Mombasa Ladies.  The losers scored through Catherine Awuor and Jerussa  Oluoch with Doris Dzidze’s shot saved by goalkeeper Morles Rona. Irene Oluoch’s shot went wide.

Coach Oyoo was full of praise to his girls saying they did it in style.

“We have achieved a lot from the tournament. Most of the girls are in school and gained a lot of exposure,” said the coach, who guided St John’s Kaloleni in 2016 to win both the national and East Africa girls’ football trophies during secondary school games.

On their way to the final, the winners beat Kwale’s Lungalunga 3-0 at Hola Prion ground while at Hola Primary pitch, Tana River stopped Ukunda Starlets 2-0.

For the third position, Firdaus Genge scored in the 24th minute to steer Lungalunga to a 1-0 victory over Ukunda Starlets.
