A new primary school has opened in Dagoretti South, Nairobi, aiming to provide safer access to education for local children.

Lenana School Primary, inaugurated in Ngando Ward, is the first public primary school in the area.

The school's opening addresses the need for improved educational facilities highlighted by a tragic incident at a private school in the ward in 2019.

"We are committed to offering a secure and accessible learning environment for our children," said area MP John Kiarie, who led the initiative.

Lenana School Primary is one of six new schools established in Dagoretti South in 2024 through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).

Other new schools include Kagira Mixed Secondary School, Mukarara Mixed Secondary School, Riruta Satellite Mixed Secondary School, Ndurarua Mixed Secondary School, and Mutuini Girls' School.

In addition to building new schools, Kiarie has introduced a school feeding programme, providing over 22,000 hot lunches daily in public schools.

"We believe that a hungry child cannot learn effectively," said Kiarie.

"This programme aims to give every child in Dagoretti South a fair chance to succeed."

Re-elected for a second term, Kiarie has focused on improving educational infrastructure using NG-CDF funds.

"Investing in our schools is investing in our future," he added.

Kiarie first won the seat by defeating former MP Dennis Waweru and was re-elected in 2022 on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

He also chairs the Departmental Committee on Education in the National Assembly, advocating for policies that support educational development nationwide.
