After winning a gold medal at the Africa Games in Democratic Republic of Congo recently, national middleweight champion Edwin Okong’o is confident of repeating the same feat at the ongoing Africa Military Games in Nigeria.

Okong’o walloped Uganda's Harold Mukuye in a middleweight bout for him to cruise into the semifinals of the weeklong competition in Abuja on Thursday night.

"We are ready to bring home a number of gold medals just the same way we did it at the Africa Games in DRC a few weeks back,” he said in a post-match interview.

He said it had been a tough match against a stubborn opponent but was happy to have won.

“My opponent was tough and stubborn and was equally ready for the victory but I’m glad to have beaten him at the end of it,” he added.

Okong’o said he is prepared well for the event.

Kenya who are the defending champions have five boxers at the event and are being coached by former international Blackmoses Mathenge.

Also joining Okong’o at the last four are bantamweight Dennis Muthama and flyweight Kevin Maina after earning byes.

Other Kenyan boxers at the contest are female pugilists welterweight Frizah Anyango and flyweight Veronica Mbithe.
