Beatrice Chebet delivered a stunning performance to win the women's 5000m at the Doha Diamond League meeting on Friday evening.

The 24-year-old Kenyan, making her track debut this season, showcased her exceptional finishing speed to take the victory in a world-leading time of 14:26.98.

Chebet's triumph came after a dramatic final lap where she caught Ethiopian rising star Ejgayehu Taye by surprise. Taye, who had set a strong pace, finished second with a season-best time of 14:29.26. Fellow Ethiopian Eisa Medina secured third place, clocking 14:34.11.

From the start, Chebet appeared in control, staying close to the Kenyan pacemaker for the opening five laps. Once the pacemaker stepped aside, Taye surged to the front, leading a pack of eight runners.

As the race progressed, the pack dwindled to five with four laps remaining, and Taye intensified the pace, leaving Gela Hambese behind.

With two laps to go, the race was down to the final trio of Taye, Chebet, and Medina.

Taye attempted a decisive acceleration just before the bell, creating a gap that Medina could not close. Chebet, however, remained close behind, setting the stage for an exhilarating finish.

In the last 200 meters, Chebet made her move on the inside, but Taye successfully blocked her attempt, forcing Chebet to switch to the outer lane.

Undeterred, Chebet produced a powerful sprint in front of a supportive Kenyan crowd, overtaking Taye to claim victory and reaffirm her dominance in the 5000m distance.

Chebet's victory in Doha not only marks a spectacular start to her season but also sets a high standard for her competitors in the Diamond League series.

With her impressive performance, she is poised for a remarkable season ahead.
