Nyaga claims another gold for Kenya in Mauritius

Caroline Nyaga delivered a masterclass running tin running to win the women’s 10,000m final at the going at the African Championships at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex, Mauritius yesterday.

Nyaga, fresh from bagging bronze medal in the women’s 5,000m on the second day of the championships, convincingly clinched the race in 32:12.61 and was followed by Uganda’s Zena Chebet (32:17.66) with Ethiopian Meret Gebre taking home silver in 32:25.97.

National 100m women’s champion Maximilla Imali powered her way to the 200m final after stopping the clock in 23.10 in third place behind Seyni Moumouni of Niger, who timed 22.78 in first position, while Natacha Ngoye of Republic of Congo finished second.  

Kenya’s Millicent Ndoro bowed out of the women’s 200m after finishing seventh in the semifinal in a race won by Lumeka Katundu of Zambia with Côte d’Ivoire’s Kone Maboundou second ahead of Quincy Malekani from Zambia.

After winning the men’s 100m continental title Ferdinand Omanyala’s dreams of a treble ended yesterday after failing to progress to semifinals of the men’s 200m event.

Omanyala, who anchored Kenya to 4x100m gold victory, finished third in heat 7 of the 200m semis in 21.01 seconds. Dan Kiviasi and Mike Mokamba who sprinted past in the heats were eventually eliminated in the semifinal.

Kiviasi timed 21.79 to finish last in his semis while Mokamba, a member of quartet that won 4x100m gold, clocked 21.06 in fourth.

Omanyala said after the race: “The body refused to respond today.”
