Greece Ambassador to Kenya Vicky Pantazopoulou yesterday led dignitaries in Eldoret City Marathon’s Climate Action tree planting exercise ahead of the race, today.

The envoy will be among dignitaries in the fourth edition of the marathon.

Pantazopoulou joined several sponsors in the traditional tree planting exercise at the Eldoret Arboretum along Eldoret-Iten road.

She said the Eldoret City Marathon had borrowed best practices from Athens Marathon.

“I am happy to be here for the fourth time. We started this journey from Greece some years ago,” Ambassador Pantazopoulou said.

She said she was proud of the Eldoret City race because it was being staged in a region that has produced the highest number of world beaters in athletics.

“Marathon is the best way to pass the message of protecting climate. Let us not forget that the meaning of a marathon is to pass a message of peace. Without peace across the world, we can’t survive,” she added.

Race Director Moses Tanui said the Climate Action plan has boosted forest cover in Uasin Gishu. Another tree planting exercise was done in Kaptagat, one of the famous training destinations in the country.

Standard Group PLC CEO Orlando Lyomu said the media house has gone ‘beyond reporting’ in Climate Action initiatives and athletics.

“The most important thing is not just providing coverage. We are also keen in ensuring that everyone plays their part in the Climate Action initiative. It is very critical for us to make sure that that ecosystem that sustains our business can go on for many years to come,” said Lyomu.
