Uasin Gishu County to recycle waste as it doubles conservation efforts

"Our administration in collaboration with strategic partners, has recognised the power of innovation and transformation. We are undertaking the conversion of waste disposal sites, mostly with plastic materials, into centres of sustainable innovation," said Bii.

The governor said funds have been allocated for feasibility studies, research and consultancies as initial stages towards the conversion of the waste disposal sites.

"We will partner with local businesses, entrepreneurs and organisatiions to transform the waste into eco-friendly products like construction materials, furniture and household items among the innovative products," Governor Bii further said.

Speaking at Moiben sub-county during celebrations to mark World Environment Day, the governor also said intensified tree planting drives tops the county's initiative towards achieving a clean and sustainable environment.

He led residents and environmental conservation stakeholders in marking the day whose theme was 'Solution to Plastic Pollution'.

The governor said ongoing tree planting drives target 250,000 indigenous species to increase cover and also support the national goal of planting 15 billion trees.

In Elgeyo Marakwet, Deputy Governor Grace Cheserek, said they are reaching out to business people and residents to continue practicing 7 Rs - by reusing, recycling, and recovering what is useful from waste disposals.

"As a county, we are working with the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) and other stakeholders on ways of discouraging people from using plastics," Cheserek said.

Speaking at Moi Kapsowar Girls, Nema County Director Steven Kilonzo said plastic pollution has been a major challenge.
