A Njoro family is in grief after a police vehicle hit and killed a woman and injured her son on Wednesday afternoon.

Atanus Njagi, a resident of Muriricua village in Njoro, Nakuru County could not hold his tears as he explained the sudden loss of his wife in the fatal accident that also involved a bodaboda.

"My wife and son were heading to Nakuru Level Five Hospital to visit an ailing relative. Minutes after taking a bodaboda to get them to the bus stage, they were knocked down," said Njagi.

Njagi explained that a police vehicle attached to Naishi Police Station in the sub county hit them from behind throwing them into a spin on the tarmac.

"People rushed to the scene to rescue them and alerted them. According to what they told me, the officer driver appeared drunk which would have led to his poor judgment," said Njagi.

The widower said that the officer agreed to rush his wife and son to the hospital but continued to drive with little regard to her severe injuries.

"Instead of using the tarmac road, the officer drove them to the hospital through another route. The road was rough and my wife screamed all along as the bumpy terrain caused her more pain," he said.

He pointed fingers at the police noting that despite him causing the accident, the officer left the hospital without a word to them leaving them to struggle with the medical processes on their own.

"I couldn't trace the officer later. I have lost my wife and had to pay for some bills for my son. I want justice for my family. This is a loss I don't know how to deal with for now," said Njagi.

Dr Munyiri Kaniaru, a medical officer at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital revealed that the deceased had sustained an open fracture on her right leg and right arm.

Dr Munyiri said that the son who is not in stable condition had sustained minor bruises and was complaining of back pains.

"The woman was brought in with severe respiratory distress. We tried to resuscitate her. She however had already lost a lot of blood and died due to shock," said Dr Munyiri.

Njoro Sub County Police Commander Isaac Odumbe confirmed the incident saying that the matter was under investigation.

"This is a matter which we are handling seriously. The necessary procedures are being undertaken to ensure the accident is investigated for justice to prevail for all parties involved," said Odumbe.
