High hopes in the Rift as Supreme Court set to deliver judgement

According to the former Roads Minister, Raila Odinga's defense team failed to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, leaving only Okiya Omutata a small chance to emerge as Odinga's Trojan horse.

He pointed out should the Supreme Court remove the last hurdle on Ruto road to the presidency paving way for the seat return to Rift Valley after 20 years, area residents will naturally expect more goodies from the Kenya Kwanza government in terms of development projects, government appointments among other largesse.

Bett said Ruto will have to grapple with a tough balancing act of looking after "home" without neglecting other corners of the country.

"What I think the scenario will be similar to the situation during the late president Daniel Arap Moi's tenure whereby Ruto will expect the region's leaders to take the frontline in addressing the area's development agenda and other issues and give him the space to concentrate on national, regional and international issues," he said.

The Kalenjin Miyoot council of leaders expressed their disappointment over the disputed presidential election though they confirmed that they will accept the court's decision.

Christopher Kitur, the Miyoot council of elders said though they hope the community will produce the fifth president, they will embrace the court's ruling and promote peace in the region.

"The country is much bigger than individual leaders and we shall not allow political differences to cause tribal clashes. We hope the court decision will be just for all across the political key players," said Mr Kitur.

Political observer Ivor Korir noted that the Supreme Court judgment today will not only affect Ruto's leadership, but also the entire Rift Valley.

Korir said the declaration of Ruto as the winner had given the Rift Valley a voice in the country after the exit of late President Daniel Moi and nullifying his win was a big blow.

"Ruto is that voice Rift Valley is looking up to champion their interest and represent them on the National stage and any decision that will not favour him will be a big blow to him and the region," he said.
