A police officer in Migori County shot his expectant wife 16 times in a bizarre incident before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide incident.
Antony Mwangi, 29, is said to have been on night duty at Migori Police Station on Saturday when he asked for permission from work saying he was feeling unwell. He was released to go home.
However, police reports indicated that Mwangi did not return his rifle to the station.
He is said to have gone to his rental house at Kawa Junction, Suna East Sub-County, where he lived with his wife Maureen Moraa Kiriago. He got there at around 11pm armed with the riffle.
County police commander Mark Wanjala noted that Mwangi seemed to have left his work station without signing off and handing over the AK47 to the officer in charge of the armoury.
“The late officer had booked off duty at report office at 11pm and proceeded to the house without handing back his firearm,” Wanjala stated.
Reports indicated Mwangi and his 27-year-old wife, who hails from Kisii County, got into an argument in the middle of the night.
According to neighbours who heard gunshots thereafter, Mwangi’s wife was expectant.
However, neighbours were not sure of the period the pregnancy had taken. They only said that the couple lived peacefully and are still shocked over the killing.
