Kuria man, 30, nabbed with homemade gun after trying to kill father

Police in Migori are holding a 30-year-old suspect who was nabbed with a homemade gun after he tried to kill his father at Naora Village in Kuria West Sub-County.

Peter Robi Chacha was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm, a homemade gun designed to use AK47 ammunition and trying to kill his 69-year-old father.

“The suspect had differed with his father over land issues and went back in his house, drew a gun and shot at his father causing a slight injury,” said OCPD Suna East Esau Ochorokodi.

Ochorokodi said the matter was reported at Kehancha Police Station at around 6:00 am on Sunday by Assistant County Commissioner at Ikerege Ms Wathome Vide after getting information for the area assistant chief Joseph Robi.

“The police officers under the command of Kehancha OCS Kibito Boino proceeded to the scene [and established that] victim sustained bruises or burns on his right cheek,” said Vide.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect escaped into the nearby bush prompting the [public to launch his manhunt.  The angry mob descended on him with a beating after he was accosted.

Mr Ochorokodi said the officer searched the scene and recovered a used cartridge and then traced the suspect at Getonganya Health Centre in Ikerege where he was receiving treatment.

“The suspect led the police to his house, then the search was done and one homemade gun together with two bullets were confiscated,” he said.

The officer said that suspect is being detained at Kehancha Police Station waiting to be arraigned on Monday

“We suspect [he] has been using the gun to terrorise people in the area and causing them sleepless nights,” he said.
