Residents were yesterday shocked when the decomposing body of a 19-year-old woman was found in a hotel room in Migori town.

According to Deputy OCPD Patrick Moibi, the body was found by a hotel attendant after two days.

"The cleaner said he was alerted by a foul smell coming from one of the rooms, which made him suspect something was wrong," Mr Moibi said.

The officer said hotel personnel said the woman, identified as Janet Awuor, had booked the room in the company of a man identified only as Otieno on Friday last week.

They said the man was seen leaving and coming back to the room but she remained out of sight.

The police said the suspected killer had told the hotel managers that the room did not require any cleaning and given instructions that they should not be bothered.

Stab wounds

It is now suspected that the man may have committed the murder within the two days that he restricted cleaners from going into the room.

"The woman's body was found on the floor and drenched in blood. Preliminary investigations into the nature of death reveal that she may have died of stab wounds, which were visible all over her body," Moibi said.

The body was taken to the Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem and police have asked residents to volunteer information that could lead to the suspect's arrest.

This is the third incident in Migori County involving the discovery of women's bodies in utility buildings.

Last month, the body of a teenage girl was found in an unlicensed medical clinic in Opapo, Rongo sub-county.

Police are yet to arrest any suspects in connection with the killing.
