Garissa, Kenya: Garissa County Government is formulating legislation that will guide the issuing of scholarships to students who qualify to join institutions of higher learning, Governor Jama Adam Nathif has announced.
Speaking during the opening of Kenyatta University’s new campus in Dadaab Sub County on Wednesday, Nathif said a proper legal structure is being drawn to fast-track the programme so that needy students can access funds for their studies as soon as possible.
Nathif said his administration would partner with institutions of higher learning to transfer knowledge to bright and dedicated youngsters keen on furthering their education.
He added universities are not only established to provide degrees and make money from students but should also play a major role in society by creating avenues for development.
“It should be a win-win situation as they (universities) enjoy the full support of the people of Garissa County,” said the governor as he appealed to residents, especially the youth, to take maximum advantage of the Kenyatta University campus.
Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Olive Mugenda said locals would be the first to be considered when employment and business contracts arise at the institution.
Admission points
She commended residents and their leaders for donating land to establish the campus. Dadaab MP Mohamed Dahiye and County Woman Representative Shukran Gure appealed to the university to lower admission points for students who would like to take courses such as nursing, engineering, medicine and law, noting that graduates in such disciplines are in high demand in the county.
Meanwhile, Nathif announced a number of development projects for Dadaab Sub County including repair of the Garissa-Dadaab Road.
