At least two people were Tuesday morning killed in an accident involving a bus and canter along the Garissa-Nairobi highway.

The vehicles, which were headed for Garissa crashed in Tula area, about 50 kilometres from Garissa Town.

According to Police, at least 30 passengers were injured and rushed to the Garissa Provincial Hospital.

Survivors said the bus was trying to overtake the canter when accident occurred at about 3.45 am. Among those who died were a man and woman.

Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru said the bus overturned and landed on its side and efforts were being made to remove some of the passengers who had been trapped.

“The bus is said to have been speeding and tried to overtake a canter. But it seems the driver miscalculated and hit it on the right side. We can confirm two deaths for now,” said Kimaru.

Kimaru called on motorists to exercise caution because most roads are wet during this rainy season.

Elsewhere, train services between Syokimau and Nairobi were suspended Tuesday morning following heavy flooding along the route.

Officials say the train that was scheduled to leave at about 7.05 am was cancelled to enable Rift Valley Railways engineers address the issue in GM, Makadara and Imara Daima areas.

The cancellation affected many passengers who usually rely on the service especially in the morning hours and there were fears the one of Embakasi route may also be affected. Officials say they hope the services will resume normally in the afternoon.
