Two graduates from Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) have been awarded Sh10 million for their project aimed at improving sanitation in Kisumu.
Vera Ouko and Vallary Oyoo are the recipients of this substantial funding from USAID through their 'Saniwise toilet' project.
As graduates with Master of Science degrees in Sanitation, they witnessed the sanitation challenges in the informal settlements of Kisumu, motivating them to develop a viable solution.
"Saniwise toilets are an ecologically and financially viable modern sanitation technology," Ouko said. "The toilet is equipped with a urine-diverting system and a urine drier that converts urine into manure."
Furthermore, she added, "The toilet can be converted into a black soldier fly or biodigester model, which follows a circular economy approach. This approach allows for the recovery of nutrients from fecal waste, resulting in a nutrient-rich biofertilizer and biomass of larvae that can be used in agriculture."
