Azimio la Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Wednesday congratulated his running mate Martha Karua for her poise during the presidential running mates debate held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
Through a statement to the public, Raila said he was particularly impressed by Karua’s mastery of topics and calmness whenever she was provoked.
“Your poise, mastery of subject matters, and staying calm even when provoked were impressive. I congratulate my able deputy and team member @MarthaKarua
“The Azimio family stands proud of your performance during last night's debate,” wrote Odinga.
The debate pitted Karua against Kenya Kwanza’s Rigathi Gachagua and the two were given time to explain how their respective camps would tackle the issues facing Kenyans.
Throughout the session, they steered clear of sideshows, save for a few accusations here and there that threatened to derail the discussion.
After the debate, Deputy President William Ruto took to Twitter to congratulate Gachagua on his performance, describing him as an astute leader who can take Kenya to the next level.
“Congratulations Rigathi Gachagua, my very able running mate. Kenyans are confident that in you, we have a seasoned, passionate and focused leader to help us steer Kenya Kwanza to victory and the nation to prosperity.”
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, who is affiliated to UDA, also said on Twitter: “Rigathi Gachagua is the radiance of wisdom and brilliance. His critics are shocked, but we are not.”
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika, another UDA politician, said: “Gachagua doing very well in the debate. Telling it like it is. He even brought receipts.”
Online, the two running mates, Karua and Gachagua, were among the top trending topics on Wednesday with netizens having a field day with various takeouts from the debate.
