MPs, businesses decry bad beach roads in Malindi

MALINDI, KENYA: Leaders and tourism stakeholders in Kilifi County have urged Government to tarmack beach roads in Malindi to attract tourism in the area.

The tourism sector players, political and religious leaders asked the Government to speed up the tarmacking of the Malindi-Casuarina- Jacaranda-Watamu road decrying slow work.

The leaders who included Malindi MP Ms. Aisha Jumwa, Malindi Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) bishop Lawrence Dena and foreign investors said the area was a key tourism attraction area but the roads were in a pathetic state.

Ms. Jumwa at the weekend told Deputy President William Ruto to intervene and ensure the contractor on site works faster as the roads were accessible to tourists and investors.

Speaking during the official opening of the Malindi sub-county education complex graced by Ruto, she claimed the contractor was only doing one kilometre each year despite the fact that the road was located in key tourist attraction areas.

The MP also told the DP to fix the Malindi beachfront road, which was also in a bad state with big potholes despite being located at the heart of tourism attractions such as Vasco Dagama and the Malindi museum.
